The Number 137
It's one of the greatest damn mysteries of physics: a magic number that comes to us with no understanding by man. You might say the "Hand of God" wrote that number, and we don't know how he pushed his pencil.
-- Richard Feynman
Is there a number at the root of the universe? A magical number that links our interpretations of it all? Many modern physicists have been intrigued or baffled by the number 137 for this reason. 137 comes from the Fine Structure Constant, which helps to measure the electro-magnetic strength of particles when they interact with each other. Understanding how these particles interact is the goal of the Standard Model. It falls short of being a complete theory because it doesn't quite explain all interactions, only the part of what happens in our universe at very small (quantum) levels. The Standard Model is one of the most promising theories in science and many believe it will bring us to the Theory of Everything (the thing Einstein was working on) which will explain all physical phenomena in the universe. Some believe that fully understanding why the fine structure constant is 137 might help with this process.
We believe in the power and mystery behind this number. As 137 is better understood it may bring about new knowledge and unite different areas of science that are all working towards similar goals. In the mean time, as people understand 137 clothing we hope it will bring different groups of people together to enhance the projects and goals they find important in life.
